My Journey To Healthy Relaxed Hair.
My hair is a mess of split ends and a crown of coarse tough hair- that’s usually how I would describe it to anyone that cared enough to ask.
When it comes to hair care and products, I’m not the smartest cookie in the jar. And for the most part of my life, I didn’t exactly care to be one – after all, it’s just hair right? But earlier this year, I made a decision to take my hair care a bit more seriously.
If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably heard me talk about this. I put it out that I was determined to have a full head of healthy relaxed hair and I got more than a few helpful tips.
Now I’m no hair blogger or specialist – Never have been, probably never would be (because never say never) but I solidified my decision to grow healthy relaxed hair by going the Profectiv Mega growth no-lye relaxer way.
I picked up a pack of Mega growth relaxer recently and got schooled on how relaxing my hair wrongly may have contributed to some of my hair issues. And because love is not just in words but in actions too, I figured it would be criminal not to share with the people I claim to love.

When it comes to relaxing my hair, I usually would just entrust every single phase of the relaxing process to the hair stylist and my instinct (when it starts to hurt). I never bothered to read through the instruction label that comes with my relaxer and now I realize why that is a bad choice.
The Mega growth relaxer kit comes with a timing guide that tells you the appropriate length of time to have the relaxer in your hair. Leaving the relaxer in for longer than instructed would only weaken your hair and cause breakage.

If you’re #TeamRelaxedHair or if you grew up relaxing your hair, you’ll definitely be used to the hair stylist applying petroleum jelly (vaseline) along the perimeter of your scalp before relaxing. This is called Basing and is done to protect the scalp from getting burnt during the relaxing process.
But do you know that you can as well base your whole scalp with the petroleum jelly before relaxing? Simply separate and part each section of your hair until the entire scalp is covered with the oil or butter you’re using.
I wish I knew this earlier because I always ended up with a burnt scalp whenever I relaxed my hair.
3. Use A Neutralizing Shampoo After Relaxing.
My first time of hearing about the neutralizing shampoo was a few days ago. Lame? I’m sure there are a few other people like me out there. So if you’re like me, who would just use any shampoo after relaxing. Stop it right now!
The main purpose of a neutralizing shampoo is to re-balance your hair’s pH level. Thankfully, the mega growth relaxer comes with its own pack of neutralizing shampoo to help you thoroughly cleanse your hair from the relaxer, rebalance your hair PH and ultimately improve health growth and volume.
P.S – I hear the ideal interval between relaxing your hair should be at least eight weeks. I usually just go with my instinct – relaxing whenever I feel like its time for another retouching.
What do you guys think? How often do you relax? Do you use a neutralizing shampoo?
Share share share! Let’s get talking in the comments.
I wish this had come some 2 years ago, but I’m on dreadlocks right now, couldn’t deal with my relaxed hair shedding and all. Then my natural went all coarse on me and I couldn’t comb it without wincing. Nevertheless I love this and I hope everyone learns from it especially number 1😆.
1. Don’t stretch your relaxer. Different ppl have varying growth spurts. E.g my sister’s hair is super coarse and she needs to retouch very 1.5months, whereas I must absolutely retouch every 2 months. Don’t stretch it because relaxers are “bad”. When you keep maneuvering due hair, your loosing inches from your growth.
2. If your trying to grow your hair, don’t leave it out and keep playing with it. It’s best you braid it up, tuck your ends away and put on a wig. While on the wig issue, you’ll need to invest in a wig cap, as well as wig band that will help keep your wig in place the whole day, to avoid loosing your edges.
3. Wash and deep condition every week. Hair won’t grow if your pores are clogged and deep conditioning helps to strengthen and provide volume to your hair.
4. Don’t trim very relaxer or very couple of months or whatever myth you’ve heard. Twin only when your ends need it.
5. Research and invest in moisture and protein conditioner. Also research about the best clarifying shampoo for your hair. HINT: try the Aegean shampoo and conditioner range
6. Leave in conditioner should be your best friend. You will also need a moisturizer.
7. Find a satin/silk bonnet or pillowcase. Cotton sucks out moisture.
8. Try to moisturize everyday and lock in the moisture with oil
9. Detangle your hair before washing. Don’t just comb and tear at your hair. Spray some water on your hair before combing. Start from the tips then upwards. Never ever comb dry hair. EVER.
10. Tell those aunties in salon to use wide tooth combs when relaxing
11. Run very far from hot tool. E.g flat irons, hot blow dryers etc
12. Also while deep conditioning, you can mix black Jamaican castor oil and honey into your conditioner for greater moisture and shine to your hair. If you don’t have a steamer, just put a shower cap over your hair for an hour.
Hey dear I sent you an email
Was at the salon two weeks ago and as I’m really not fussed about my hair at this point, I let my stylist use her products (She’s fab and I trust her). When she finished, I realised she had used this relaxer. And then she kept going on and on about how fab it was. Looks exactly the same but not sure if its a different one for the UK. Prob not. Anyway, maybe when I decide to take my hair seriously again, I’ll stick to this. Long healthy relaxed hair is all I want!

Thanks for these tips. After relaxing the hair with relaxer,it is good to use neutralizing shampoo to wash the hair and its main purpose of a neutralizing shampoo is to re-balance your hair’s pH level.
