Remember in my last weekend bits post where I mentioned that my friend and I went to hans and rene and I would put up a review later? Well, yeah!
I had been hearing about hans and rene and seeing some of their really tempting pictures on instagram but if you know how these social media things work, they hype things only for you to go there to wonder what all the hype was for.
Well, I wanted to satisfy my curiousity so when my friend proposed that we go there, I was all for it.
We braved Lagos traffic and went to the island on a weekday (It was that deep. Lol)
Hans and rene is located at the Radisson blu hotel in victoria Island.
It is a gelataria and bakery.
I hear ‘gelato’ is some fancy italian word for icecream with less calories, but to me its all icecream.
Anyways, we got in and I was quite impressed with the decor and ambiance of the place. There is an outdoor and indoor sitting area and the ceiling was this wallpaper with clouds and sky design, really pretty.
The restroom has this illusion effect thing going on and that was also pretty cool stuff.
I was a bit confused on what flavour of ice cream/gelato to get and the guy at the counter helped me so I’ll say the service was alright, I can’t say they were extremely cheerful or anything but the service was alright.
My friend got doughnuts and while we waited for our orders to be processed, I decided to take some pictures.
Everything was going fine and dandy, till someone came to ask if I took permission to take the pictures and someone else popped into the restroom to ask if we were bloggers and why we were taking pictures. Lool
They were both really polite though, so I’ll give that to them but at this point, let me just ask what’s it with Nigerians and this ‘camera phobia’ ?!
Once they see you with a camera, they start to get all conscious and either harass you for money or start asking plenty plenty questions.
If I were using an iphone, I’m sure I wouldn’t have been bothered and an Iphone does a great job also so please what’s the fuss?
What could they have thought I was going to use the pictures for? Any ideas guys? To plan how to come rob them?
What else if not for social media sake ey? Educate me guys, I need answers!
That aside, the icecream/gelato was quite enjoyable, nice.
Would I go back? Yup.
Majorly because of the ambiance which seems like a nice place to chill with friends and to try their cupcakes and other icecream flavours too.
I had two scoops of ice cream and a scoop cost 650Naira, I can’t quite remember how much my friend’s doughnut cost but there’s a picture of the menu up there in case you’re interested in their prices.
Have you ever been to hans and rene?
How was your experience?
You can find them on instagram @HansandRene
P.S – I just want to say thank you all so much for all the really supportive comments in my last post, I truly appreciate every single one of you. Thank you!
P.P.S – So I shot a video with a fellow blogger, Deola of omogemura.com.
I’m not exactly a huge fan of videos because I’m somewhat shy, I don’t know how to sound “janded” a.k.a phonΓ© and I never quite know what to do with my face but yes! This is me facing my fears and saying yes to trying out new things.
So if you want to watch a video of I and Deola answering some questions about ourselves, please click here.

Girl I don't get the camera phobia either, you know It's even worse when I use my tripod. I blame jew jew and Boko Haram sha. Anyways this looks like a cool spot to chill, very western as well. The front would make a nice spot for photos if allowed. I wish Abuja had more spots like this, you Lagos folks have all the fun.

Lol. Well, can anyone get icecream wrong? I would have loved to try those their special flavours – agbalumo, zobo and co but they didn't have it that day.
Agbalumo flavor? Wow!
I'm definitely visiting this place once I'm back in Lagos. Beautiful pictures too.
Going to watch the video immediately.

Thank you Funmi! Trust that I shall relay this compliment to her
I still haven't been to this place o.
On picture taking at establishments, I think it is best to state your intent and ask for permission. It saves you and the management of the establishment a whole lot of embarrassment. Especially with the possibility of customers getting uncomfortable. You don't want them losing customers while you're having your way. It's just best to ask.
I guess so but I still think its making a big deal out of nothing though because I could have still gotten the same pictures with a phone and nobody would have asked why I was taking pictures if I used a phone.
I'll ask next time though because I truly hate uncalled for embarrasments.
This is a sign ….I just told my friend this morning let's go here and she was like the ice cream fit cost like 5k Lool (she's a clown) ….but with this …am going
Lmao. She isn't oh! Same thing I thought when I first heard of the place because man can't be spending 5k untop icecream, then someone told me it was 650/scoop so I said issokay, I can now proceed to head over there.
Nice review. I can't wait to try Hans and Rene. I've heard so much about it.
Don't be offended when people ask why you're taking pictures with your camera, especially if it's a professional-looking camera. For all they know you might be taking pictures for commercial purposes (to sell for example). In some places like the airport, they are quite testy about it for safety reasons. Anyway, it's always a good idea to ask first before taking pics even if it's with your phone.
Well, this makes sense but remember pictures of the place are already online from reviews on other blogs and sites. I might as well lift it from there and sell if I wanted to sell. Plus who sells pictures of public places though?
As a certified foodie, best believe I have heard of and plan to visit this place. But the way traffic from my area to the island and back is set up…
Nigerian and Natural
Lagos traffic steady not allowing someone prosper!
Weekend might be less busy but these days sef, traffic can't be predicted
Oh Lord! The ice cream looks mouth watering. Gelato or not, all na icecream.
As for the camera phobia… mehn! I tire o! Once ai just pull out my camera, all eyes on me. The other day, whilst in car, I was taking pictures of the sky and buildings in hold up next thing, a police man came to harass me, telling me I was taking pictures of him when my camera was clearly pointing upwards.

Yes to Nigeria and camera – phobia! I experienced it in Abuja where I was held at gun point by state military for photographing central bank. Asinine imbeciles! Never been so frightened and all for what? A good shot which I had to delete to prove I wasn't a threat? Nonsense
BLEURGH – http://www.bleurghnow.com
Perhaps I will share that on my blog, as I never did
Ahh, baby girl that one is different ohhh.
I would never try to snap a bank or in a bank, not to talk of CBN. Its a bank and not just any bank, Central bank! so its understandable that one shouldn't be allowed to take pictures of it because of security reasons.
Sorry about that but I totally understand their actions this time.
Ha! Please listen to Cassie o. There are certain places you can't even dare glance at or else the military will try to use you for target practice. That's how we tried to make a U-turn in front of a Defense office – see the way they flew out and made us turn right back around.

LOL Nigerians and cameraphobia. It is real.
I had been wanting to try H&R for the longest time, but V/I is such a sore spot for me. You are so brave for going on a weekday. Tueh. I can't. But thankfully, I saw them at Tasteoff Lagos, and got some gelato. π
I just watched the video, you looked really calm and collected. oh beautiful of course. I'm sittin at my desk and all i can think of is ice cream now ahhhhhhh

I watched your video, and I think you did very well Cassie. You should consider doing a vlog in the future. Perhaps something related to health and beauty. What do you say? I think you could really do a lot of good for a lot of people. Please consider it.
Must try H&R! I usually ask before I take pictures in such places o I don't like embarrassment. I totally agree on the taking pictures with your phone thing. Baffling! As if it's not the same picture :s

Camera Phobia with Nigerians I don't get it at all. Same thing happened to me at Ice Cream Factory over the weekend, If anything the Publicity is good for them.

@cassie 650/scoop. Then you decide to try and mix at least 2flavors and oh lemme try a brownie or choc. Cake. *yumyum*. Besides those fancy flavours cost abit more. Before you know, your life savings are gone. I tell you.
I've heard of H&R. Must stop when I'm in Lag. Sarah is right, you Lagos folks have all the fun.
