Lately, I’ve been on some sort of reading spree. Crossing books off my reading list, spending my days with my face buried inside a book and retiring earlier than normal to bed just so I can snuggle in with a book till sleep takes me under its wings.
I always say that I am thankful for words. And truly I am. I like to think that books and words saved me.
I fell in love with books as a kid and though I have some dry spells like I talked about here, it’s a love that will always be a constant. One that would never leave me.
Related: How I’m rekindling my love for reading.
Today is #bookloversday and as a self-proclaimed book lover, I decided to share my current reading list with Y’all and also use the opportunity to answer the most asked question I get on my instastory whenever I share the books I’m reading – where I get my books from.
Let’s dig in.
1. An American Marriage.
This was one of the first books I read when I started my reading spree and it spurred me on. It follows the love story of a newly wed black couple whose marriage gets shattered by a false rape conviction and a jail sentence.
It is written in such an enjoyable form and filled with so much wisdom on life and love. I LOVED it!
The use of hand written letters to communicate in the book had such a profound effect on me that immediately after reading it, I decided to get myself an email penpal to recreate it.
2. Me Before You Trilogy.
Jojo Moyes “me before you” was such an emotional book. I saw the movie before the book which heightened the emotions I felt while reading it.
I recently found out that the story of Elizabeth Clark didn’t end with Will’s death but continues in two books- after you and still me. Both not as emotional as “me before you” but a great read nonetheless.
3. The Leavers.
Lisa Ko’s The leavers is a heart wrenching book telling the story of Deming Guo, the son of an undocumented Chinese immigrant whose mother suddenly goes missing. A traumatic event that eventually shapes the course of his life.
I was hooked from start to somewhere in the middle when the mystery of what happened to the mother finally unraveled.

Alice Feeney’s sometimes I lie is a psychological thriller like no other. Complete with a twist that I never saw coming. This book played with my mind at some point but I loved it!
It opens up with the lead character stuck in a coma where she can still hear bits of what goes on around her but can’t move or speak. It goes back and forth telling the story of the activities that led up to that point and life after it.
5. The Hate You Give.
This was such a heartbreakingly honest account of what is happening right now. It touches on police brutality, racism and was inspired by the black lives matter movement.
The main character Star watched her friend get killed wrongfully by the police. It was an emotional read for me, kind of like watching slavery movies and feeling so angry but unable to do anything about it.
6. When Breath Becomes Air.
This book came highly recommend but if I’m being frank, I didn’t enjoy this so much. I wouldn’t rate it so highly and neither would it roll off my tongue if I’m asked to list my fave books.
It is a memoir by a young neurosurgeon faced with a terminal cancer diagnosis which eventually lead to his death
I expected a deeply moving book and I believe it could have been that and more but the writer seemed too technical with his writing and that took the passion out of it.
On the plus side, it reminded me of my own mortality and gave me a sort of motivation to get stuff done while I can because “the problem is that we think we have time” when we truly can’t determine how much time we have.

So much I want to tell you is a self help book that doesn’t read like your typical self help book in the sense that it is relatable and feels like a sort of biography too – very personal, candid and no holds barred.
Written by popular YouTuber Anna Akana (Confession: I didn’t know anything about Anna before reading this) and inspired by the suicide of her teen sister, she shares a variety of life lessons she has picked up from learning to deal with her loss to being a creative.

Where I Get My Books From?
If there’s one question I get asked a lot on my instagram it’s where I get the books I read from.
The answer is Google! Not what you were expecting right? I just google and search till I find what I want. A couple off amazon and a few from friends.
I prefer hard copy books to e-books but I find e-books more convenient. With hard copy books, I have to do appropriate research and be 100% sure of the books I want before I buy them.
I got two books from the Jazzhole a few years ago and to my utter disappointment, I ended up not liking any/dumping them halfway.
Are you more of an e-book or hard copy type person? Have you read any of these books? What’s currently on your reading list Please share, leave a comment and let’s connect!

I love hard copy books but like you said e-books are convenient at the moment. I’ve read the American wedding and I love it. Thanks for sharing your reading list 😄
Thank you for sharing your reading list. Definitely adding them to my list. On my list I have Shatter me by Tahereh Mafi, The famished road by Ben Okri, Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Expery and The hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy by Douglas Adams. In addition, yes Oceanofpdf has been taken down but and alternative is http://en.booksee.org/
Oh and you should read The Alchemist if you have not already done that
Have you watched the movie adaptation of ‘Me before you’? You’ll be heartbroken at the way the movie made nonsense of the book.
Anyways, nice reads but I definitely prefer hard copies to the soft copies but I have a problem getting them here in Anambra! Any Ideas on where I can buy the hard copy of ‘The subtle art of not giving a fuck’?
Roving Heights is an online book store, they have the book. Check them out on Instagram. I think they ship to any location in Nigeria.
Paperback any day any time, although I read ebooks when I can’t get my hands on the hard copy. Just got my hands on “Children of blood and bone” so that’s where I’ll be lost in for the next couple of days. Thanks for sharing your reading list, let me go amd update mine!!!
Oh Cass! These books 😍. Thank you!
I love hard copy books..especially old ones.. but I enjoy the crispness and freshness of the new ones too.. I don’t mind softcopies either, though initially it was a problem reading focusedly without straying to research on whatever gold i was discovering inside or straying to pinterest/canva. But today I’ve got 131 books on my mobile and counting and I’m loving it. I’m currently reading “On black sister’s street”.
I’ve been trying to rekindle my love for reading too and this post has inspired me to get on it right now. Can you recommend any book apps for someone who can’t buy off amazon? Thank you!
I enjoyed reading this post. I have a long list of books to read in the last 3rd and 4th quarter of the year and I’ve only finished two (2). LOOL!!! I prefer hard copies to E-books because I’m hoping to one day have a mini library in my home and have my children read too. I still read E-books though especially when getting the hard-copy is difficult (which is the case most times for my novels).
One App I discovered recently on Android is Scribd and it has some really amazing books for free (that’s the best part)!!
My reading list right now below; Only 20 out of the 10 books are E-books.
1. Forever Faithful Trilogy by KAREN KINGSBURY
2. Sabrina by LORI WICK
3. The Power of a Praying Wife, Parent & Mum by STORMIE OMARTIAN
4. The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives by LOLA SHONEYIN

6. Spirit Controlled Temperament by TIM LAHAYE
7. 29 Single and Nigerian by NAIJASINGLEGILR

9. Dating Intelligently by LAJU IREN (I’VE READ THIS)
10. Smart Money Woman by ARESE UGWU (I’VE READ THIS 3 TIMES)
Sorry for the long post.
I also love hard copy books but you have to make sure it’s the right one before buying because are so expensive. So e-books make it so much easier to read more and I also love all your seven picks and I will make sure to read sometimes I lie.
Hey are all your books on iBooks or you have app for them?
Reading this post just reminded me of how a book worm I’ve been whilst I was younger. I need to rekindle my love for reading 😭
stealing your readig list right away.
I prefer hard copies any time any day…although, once in a while i manage to finish e-books.
I just love that i can underline, highlight and literally devours my books but i hate that i cant read it at work for fear of them “borrow-me” people.
You should try out @bookpeddlerng on IG, I get my books from her.
I’m definitely adding sometimes I lie to my to my list. I’m not so much of an avid reader but I have an unending passion for thrillers, mystery, and a little bit of Romance.
