Blogging with a 9 – 5 : How To Make It Work.

Whether school, work, or a side hustle.

P.S – You might want to read my blogging process here first.

If there’s one question I get asked a lot its ‘how did you combine med school, modelling and blogging on a regular.
To be honest, at first I didn’t see it as such a great feat and I couldn’t see what all the fuss was about.

My reply was always ‘well, I just make it work somehow after chirping in something about it having to do with finding the right balance also and just generally finding time to do something if you really love it”

You see, back then blogging was this new fun thing that I was just exploring and I did majorly outfit posts so I would always carry my camera to school, get a classmate to help me take some pictures during any break, edit and type in the words later in the day and still have my time to study.
I was always studying on the go as well (in the bus back home/to school and even to castings or while at a job).

It wasn’t till I got into final year and work load increased x 100, then I realized that I couldn’t just freestyle it anymore and I had to make a more conscious effort to manage my life and the things I had interest in.

I think I’ve done pretty good (if I do say so myself) : two years plus of blogging, modelling on the side and an MB;BS in the bag so I thought to finally try to put together a proper post sharing some of my tips instead of the ‘just find time’ I keep telling people.

1. Believe you can.
If you’ve read my story on how I started modeling (read here), you’ll know that I got quite a few opportunities but I kept turning them down because I just didn’t believe I could handle med school and any extracurriculars. Thank God I saw the light.
If there’s one thing I’m learning in life is that you are the only person that can limit yourself.

Its that you are what you think you can and cannot do.
Its that the mind is this really huge thing that people often times underestimate its power because that’s where it starts from. Your mindset..
You have to decide who you are, what you can do and then go after what you want. So yes the first step is believing you can actually juggle it all.

2. Diarize/Plan in Advance!
Now that you believe you can handle it all, get a blog book/diary.

Take it along with you everywhere and write down every single idea you have
Not only does it help you have ideas to develop on later, it also gives you a visual of what needs to be done, prioritize and stay organized. Even if I don’t have my blog book with me, I always jot down in the note pad on my phone and transfer/try to make sense of it all later. I have posts to write and even ‘outfits to shoot’ written somewhere in my diary.

UPDATED : I just put together a comprehensive blog planner which has taken over my diaries and help me stay way way more organized! You can read all about that and get yours here.

3. Have a schedule.
One that works just fine for you.

You don’t have to post every day if you can’t handle that. If two times a week is what works for you, then do that and do it consistently.

4. Find Time, Commit and stop procrastinating.
Make out time to write those posts because you just gotta. Trust me, you can always squeeze out time especially when you have your plan and schedule down plus post ideas handy.

Are you freer on weekends? Well, create 20-30mins to work on writing posts and if possible one or two ahead of time.

If you’re a style blogger, you can shoot at work with the help of your colleagues (like I used to do back then in school), find someone to help you take pictures at events you attend or you can as well shoot outfits in bulk.

For me, I’ve found that I get tired quickly when I have to stare at a laptop screen so I do most of my work with my trusty old blackberry phone and I also like to write my posts at night when I’m in bed.

My biggest problem is actually procrastination! For example this post was meant to go up on wednesday according to my schedule but I put off writing it all through monday to wednesday even though I had time to and only decided to do it last minute and I’m actually writing this now by 11pm while in bed *sigh*
5. Ask for help.
I started accepting some guest posts on this blog recently, majorly because I wanted a bit of variety but you can always ask people to guest blog/ contribute for you to shift some load off your back.

6. Utilize blogging Apps and tools.
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to make the best use of apps out there but its something that I’ll probably still have to do, especially with help for social media. Thinking up post ideas and writing it is enough stress as it is and then there’s the promoting it on social media bit. Ugh! I sincerely hate this part and sometimes wish I could just skip it.
Please ehn, you can just subscribe here to make my life easier small.
Check out this post on 39 tools you can use for blogging.
7. Its okay to say no.
I had to turn down some requests to contribute to sites I knew would help boost my traffic because I already had a lot on my plate.
Its also okay to take a break for a short while when it starts to get too much.
************
I’m writing this post for myself more than anything because I know when I start house job, work load will be so much and it won’t be just a 9 -5 but on most days I might have to work till morning (yup! Its that real) but I hope it also helps someone out there – even if its a little bit.
How do you manage your blog and school demands/ or a job? Iā€™d love to read some of your tips, please share!

  • Oh Cassie. This is such a good read. Believing you can is always the major thing, good thing you put it first. Although I am still learning majorly how to balance out everything I am doing, believing you can and writing it down has to be the major thing that has help me stay sane. The one I have learn is saying No. I don't know if you Marie foleo on YouTube but she talk about smtn in this light. Saying No has to be my new word now. Lol. Have a great day.

  • Mehn…. You are a super hero for chugging all that . Pharmacy got tighter, every single second was just that important. I had to take time out from blogging. Would soon be back tho.
Your tips are super valuable . Thanks Cassie

    • I know that feeling of 'every single second is important'. I remember feeling guilty for everytime I wasn't spending doing school stuff because EVERY SINGLE SECOND was just tooo important! But still I tried to make small time here and there.

I'm glad you found it helpful kene šŸ™‚

  • This was very kind of you to share Sandra. I have a blog ("Many Tribes One Nation") which I hardly ever have time to post new material on. Content takes time and inspiration to develop. My problem isn't procrastination o. I wish it were. I just feel that quality is very important. What's worth doing is worth doing well.

  • Hey Cassie,

This is such a good read and I promise it's like you read my mind. I am a planner in general but so far blogging has been this fun hobby and I always seem to have time for it but soon my schedule will be intense, I want to start a YouTube channel and I've been trying to fugure out how I'll make blogging, law school and YouTube work whilst still being able to get out of my apartment, lol. This really helps.

    Great advice.

  • I've been exploring for a bit for any high quality articles or weblog posts on this sort of
house . Exploring in Yahoo I at last stumbled upon this site.
Studying this information So i'm happy to express that I have a very just right uncanny feeling I discovered
exactly what I needed. I such a lot undoubtedly will make sure to don?t
forget this site and provides it a glance on a continuing basis.

  • I also found very hard initially to balance between my fulltime job (office works) and then blogging (where I am interested). This has resulted in coming up of only one or two posts in a month. That was sad on my part.
Later I realized I shouldn't do. So I started making a time table on which date/week of a month I should write post for my blog. Upon strict compliance, I found balanced life. And yeah just like you I also keep making note of those ideas on which I can write when I am with my friends and families. I usually draft my post in the evening; before I doze off.
And yeah when things don't go as we want, like you believing in self is the only tool that will hold us and take ahead.
Thanks Cassie. Keep blogging. Regards from Bhutan.

    XOXO

  • Wow! This is really helpfull! I think am gonna take that jotting things down more serious.always have idea of what to post next and writeups in my head buh when it's time to post, will forget most of the things I wanted to say because I didn't note them down. I believe blogging is a gradual process, keep learning few things to make it better everyday.thanks for sharing this.

  • Its pretty much the same thing, I work 8-5 and I have to beg my colleagues to help me take pictures. I try to shoot bulk outfits on weekends that I have time. I pretty much just freestyle it but I try to post every week. Thanks for sharing dear.

    • You gerriiit! I pretty much used to just freestyle it and just go with the flow, that's why I couldn't really give a detailed reply when I got asked how I do it back then. Lol

      Thanks for reading babe

  • Its pretty much the same thing, I work 8-5 and I have to beg my colleagues to help me take pictures during break or early in the morning. I try to shoot bulk outfits on weekends that I have time but that's rare because I usually have much work piled up too. I pretty much just freestyle it but I try to post every week, consistency is key. Thanks for sharing dear.

  • Thanks for this post. I was soo excited to read this and I wasnt dissapointed. I am so full of ideas but WORK always got in the way. I swear that nothing gives me more joy than blogging about my DIY but I can't bear to open my blog again because I feel like its super mad at me for this long period of abandonement. Thanks soooo much for the tips. I am relaunching in December and hopefully for good this time.
Its funny how I feel you were my friend in another world or something. Lol. Super wierd! Thanks again for the tips and WELLDONE!!!

  • Nice! I've actually been wondering how you did it and it's worth commending. No matter how tight one's schedule is, you can always have time to do what you want. It's just a matter of good planning. I learnt that too in med school. Just started my blog on fiction and I hope to be like you when I grow up. Lol. Thumbs up girl!

  • Mehn. You hit the nail on the head with this. Sigh. Procrastination is my BIGGEST problem. Then theres the fear of my camera and laptop being stolen(It's a rational fear- Unilag people are mean!). I summoned up courage to take my camera to school but not enough for my laptop- I can not buy new one o. So theres the problem of editing and such.

I plan and plan but never follow through. I have decided to show some discipline (which hopefully you have noticed) and follow the plans. I think 2016 will be a better blogging year for me.

Thank you so much for the post, the "make time" advice was rather disappointing (though helpful- it kicked me into action). I appreciate it.

    Mira La Belle blog

    • Lool. Sorry it was disappointing ehn. But really that was the only way I was able to do it back then – I just made time really, prioritized and tried to balance it all out.

I'm glad that you found this helpful though!

  • Balancing a blog and work life can be hard. For me, I leave the house around 6.30am in the morning four days a week and don't get home till about past 5 or 6pm. By the time I get home, I just want to sleep and not open the blog. The sense of fulfilment of publishing a post and the reasons behind starting the blog are what keeps me going.

I need to use my long commute to work as a time to jot down ideas for the blog. I'm planning to use your tip by getting a small book for that. By the way, your Instagram picture about the post was what made me know about this post so your labour on blog marketing on social media is not in vain.

  • Your tips are spot on!
    Procrastination is my BIGGEST problem!
Sometimes I write the post and then become too lazy to edit/upload the pictures so the post sits there for eons.
Writing in bulk when I'm free and scheduling posts helps.
I am seriously considering featuring other bloggers' contributions on my blog as well.

  • The truth is that blogging consistently is hard and if you are not passionate about it, you would get overwhelmed with life and in this days of serious competition , with so many bloggers around, you have to be consistent to keep your readers, they have so many great alternatives out there. Also I feel you on the post promotion bit…sigh but we have to do what we have to do right? spot on post!

  • Great post! I was just wondering about how I'm going to do this! I start working fulltime again next month. It's already hard enough blogging with my husband and child bugging me. I need to make sure I'm organized.

  • Blogging took a hit during house job. Procrastination is a female dog but I just couldn't put extra pressure on myself, would have exploded. I had to freestyle with timing and just post when I could write.
Now I have to try to be more strict with myself.
And yes, promoting on social media is such a drag. This coming from someone who no longer has a Facebook account and is far less active on twitter than in the past. Basically I just use instagram. Is there even hope for me?

  • I love this post. I work a full-time job and started a YouTube channel and blog just a few months ago – and on top of that, I just started a new relationship. So I have a few friends who have asked me where I'm finding the time for it. But I really don't have a secret – I stopped going out as much, and I stopped watching as much tv. I work on networking and recording videos as much as I can in the morning before I go to work, and then at night I focus on editing and writing posts (and more networking).

Granted, when you're getting started, finding a day to actually be off, relaxing, and not on the move is impossible, but I enjoy what I do, so it rarely actually feels like work. So I don't even think it's about finding time. It's about finding joy in what you're doing so that you'll want to do it constantly in small increments as you can whenever you get a free moment.

  • Hey, I just started really blogging this year….well my interest for it grew more this year. I work 12 hours shifts (which I am sure you might when you start house job). By the time I get off work I can honestly sleep for another 12 hours ( I work in the emergency room so I am forever on my feet šŸ™ ). What works for me the most is having a blog planner & writing my post ahead of time. I also started scheduling my posts & this has truly been a life saver.
