The Ultimate Camera Buying Guide For Content Creators – 5 Budget Friendly Cameras To Consider.

Today’s post is one that I’m super excited to share as it addresses one of the most frequently asked questions I get. For some reason (probably because of my review of the Sony A6000), people keep asking me for tips in choosing a camera and suggestions for budget-friendly and good cameras for bloggers /content creators.

But honestly? I am no pro when it comes to cameras/photography and if you read my post on switching from a DSLR to a mirrorless camera, you’ll know the amount of research and external help I got before taking that decision.

So, I figured I might as well address this question finally but go a step further by asking one of Nigeria’s finest photographers – “Lex Ash” to advice/share his top 5 cameras for bloggers from his broad experience as a professional photographer.

Let me start by saying that the best camera for anything is the one you have readily available to you at that moment. Whether it is the one in your hand as you’re reading this (i.e. your smartphone), a point and shoot camera or a DSLR.

For this list, I’ll stay away from compact cameras and the “GoPros” because as a blogger or vlogger, you’ll definitely get to points where you’ll want to either exchange or switch out your lenses to suit the type of shoot you’re doing.

In no particular preferred order, here are my top 5 favorite DSLRs and mirrorless cameras for bloggers /content creators to consider that wouldn’t tear a hole in your pocket.

1. Canon M50.Canon M50 image - best cameras for bloggers and vloggers

For someone who is particularly excited about DSLRs, this mirrorless is probably my favorite on this list. I’ve handled it and know its capabilities, so trust me, I know what I’m saying when I say this might just be the best option on this list.

At $600 which comes with a 15-45mm lens, you’re getting an awesome ultra high definition camera to use for your vlogs and photos. It is pretty small and easy to carry about, so it won’t weigh you down and it comes with dual-pixel autofocus which is my favorite thing about it.

Related: DSLR vs Mirrorless Cameras. What’s the difference?

Dual pixel autofocus basically means that it will quickly autofocus with your face while you shoot even if you move it in and out of the initial focus area. This works best for vloggers because sometimes you want to record things on the go without having to adjust the lens.

The downside is that it isn’t great at shooting 4k, and you’ll have to get an adapter to use it with the regular Canon DSLR lenses. But for the price, it is quite an exciting piece of hardware to own.

2. Canon EOS Rebel T6i (EOS 750D / Kiss X8i).Canon-EOS-750D budget friendly cameras for bloggers

One thing that’s super important in cameras for bloggers and especially for vlogging is focus tracking and live view autofocus. And it seems Canon has gotten this right so far.

Their latest Rebel series (the latest being the T7i which unfortunately is above the price point for this article) have something called the Hybrid CMOS AF III which claims to focuses quickly and accurately.

The T6i camera isn’t as small as the others on this list, but it deserves to be on this list because of it’s autofocus capabilities, pretty impressive sensor and the vast availability of lenses that can be used with it.

I’ll recommend you get it with a Canon 50mm f1.8 STM lens- one of the cheapest and sharpest budget lenses available in the market.

3. Olympus Pen E-PL9.olympus pen camera - best cameras for bloggers and vloggers

If you’re like me, and you’re pretty nostalgic about old cameras that can add a lovely retro look to your outfit, and still give you brilliant results for your vlogging and blogging needs, the Olympus range is a fantastic idea!

The E-PL9 has 4K video recording, instant film filters, and contrast based AF system that works amazingly well. It is very customizable, comes with a touch screen that allows you to autofocus with it, and easily connects via Bluetooth to your smartphone for easy transfer and sharing.

It is a micro four-thirds camera though, but that’s not a problem considering the variety of lenses you can get with it.

4. Sony a6000.sonyA6000 mirrorless cameras for bloggers

If it’s not some sort of Camera god blasphemy, I dare say that Sony has in the past couple of years caught up to the great Nikons and Canons when it comes to producing dope cameras with mass appeal. The a6000 is no exception.

I think this might be my second favorite on this list. The Sony hybrid autofocus system is still one of the best on the market, their sensors amazing for low light and the A6000 comes complete with touch screen, flip screen, and excellent image quality.

It also comes with wifi and NFC that allows for easy transfers and sharing.

5. Panasonic LUMIX G7.panasonic-lumix-dmc-g7 cameras for bloggers

One word – 4K! The new buzzword for video enthusiasts and creators alike. This camera sits right in the sweet spot of performance, size, and price. It is pretty light, easy to use, isn’t as big or bulky as a DSLR and gives excellent video & photo quality.

If you’re more inclined towards vlogging or doing more videos than photography, this is the one for you. Panasonic has focused most of its weight on making video cameras for indie filmmakers, and the good part is that it does really well with still photography as well.

It also comes with image stabilization and a touch screen that you can flip out and around.

I’ll round up this post by stating that there are other options that are obviously much better and come with way more advantages than these. But when it comes to price, these are the top of the line and my faves as at the time of writing this.

Also, You can google each of the cameras to read more in depth reviews and compare costs before making your final decision.

I hope this has been as helpful to you all as it was to me. Thank you so much for honoring my post request and sharing with us Lex!

I personally use the Sony A6000 and I know a few people that use some of the other cameras he listed. If you’ll like to add anything to this post, please feel free to leave a comment and share this post using the click to tweet buttons if you found it helpful.
