Sometime during the weekend, I hooked up with my friend Laila who is a pro MUA/Beauty blogger to talk skin care, and shoot an outfit post. We also ended up having a day filled with skin care DIY and whipped together a homemade face mask and scrub.
DIY projects are so much fun! Especially when you get to do it with someone else. Getting together with Laila to do this was really exciting for me because I had just run out of my face scrub and I got to leave with my own budget-friendly and equally effective homemade face mask and scrub as a replacement.
Everything turned out so perfectly that I figured it would be a crime if I didn’t share this winning formula with Y’all.
I’m forever on the quest for natural skin care products – you might know this if you’re a regular here. I talked about going natural with my skin care routine in this post and also my experience with black soaps here.

There are probably a million and one homemade face mask and scrub formulas on the internet but I decided to go with Laila’s formula because I could see first hand the effect it has had on her own skin and I was impressed!

DIY Brown Sugar And Honey Face Scrub.
Benefits:
Brown sugar helps to exfoliate the skin (remove the dead surface skin cells), together with Lemon juice which is a key component of this scrub. Lemon is rich in vitamin C and citric acid, both of which can help brighten dark spots and tone your skin for that healthy glow. Honey, on the other hand, hydrates the skin and has antimicrobial qualities
This super easy DIY Sugar face scrub is the perfect way to start your natural skincare journey! Click To TweetWhat You’ll Need:
- Lemon.
- Brown sugar.
- Honey
- Essential oils (Optional)
- Coconut oil (Optional)
- A small container and spoon to stir
Instructions :
- Wash and grate the back of the lemon to make the zest ( The zest is the outer layer which contains flavours).
- Cut into halves, remove the seeds and squeeze out the lemon juice into your container.
- 3. Put your brown sugar into the lemon juice into the container and break/melt it in. (You don’t have to use cubes but that was the only form we could find)
- 4. Add your honey and zest to the mixture and stir.
- 5. Put in your coconut oil and essential oil and stir.
- 6. Ta-Dah! You’ve made yourself a jar of DIY face scrub!
Easy right?!
Proportions.
In case you’re wondering how you would measure the proportions to use – Honestly, it’s up to you and just like it is with cooking, you’ll know just whats enough as you go along. But we used just one half of the lemon and 8 cubes of the brown sugar as you can see. The consistency wasn’t super thick but If you want yours thicker, you can always add more brown sugar to it.
DIY Turmeric Face Mask.
Benefits:
The turmeric and honey face mask is a pretty easy one. I already stated the benefits of honey in the scrub recipe. Turmeric like honey, also contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components that help in brightening scars and toning the skin. It slows the growth of facial hair, controls oily skin and also helps with acne.
What You’ll Need:
- Turmeric.
- Honey.
Instructions :
- Mix both honey and turmeric together till it gets to the consistency you want. Easy Peasy!
Here’s the final verdict on our homemade face mask and scrub.
Laila’s friend was eager to try out our DIY face scrub and mask, so we turned her to our model and she could also feel a difference in her skin immediately after use.
I’ve been using the scrub specifically for a while and I can attest to how effective it is. My face always feels smoother and softer every time, so much that I’ve been going around asking people to feel how soft my skin is. lol
UPDATE –
I have since stopped using face scrubs on my face (Physical exfoliation) and have switched to chemical exfoliation. I wrote a post to explain the difference between physical and chemical exfoliation and why I switched HERE.

This is just what the doctor ordered, I just broke out last week and I am panicking because I am not used to it at all. I am going to try the honey and lemon mask and see what happens.
Let me know how that works out for you! Don’t forget oh, I’ll love to know if it helped. Thanks for stopping by ❤❤
I’m a huge turmeric face mask person so I know it works! My skin isn’t a huge acid fan so I don’t know how it’ll take to lemon but brown sugar is a boss exfoliator! I really like natural skin care alternatives so I enjoyed this. Great post!

It must have really been a good post to bring you here haha. Thank you!
Lemon sadly doesn’t work for me plus I’ve read the many disadvantages of using it.
Turmeric, however is one I’d definitely love to try again.
Great post, as usual come.

I read that it isn’t good for people with sensitive skin. I should definitely update my post with that info – thanks for bringing it to my notice. I’ve never had any side effects though. Thanks for reading Dami!
Great tips for the home remedies, thanks for sharing and greetings!
One thing I have done this year is to go highly naturally with every thing hair and skin. I have used these and they are the bomb. Like they really work. You should try the turmeric and milk face mask too. I love that they are fun to do too.

Turmeric and milk sounds so good! But will it achieve the pasty consistency? Feels like it would hit be liquidy or how does that work?
How often do you use this for optimum result?
I use the scrub 3 times a week and the face mask every now and then (weekends mostly and nights I’m not on call and have the energy to take time in the bathroom lol)
Love the new look of the blog and this awesome blog post. Lord knows I need to take care of my skin.
DId you get a new theme or did you move completely?
I love natural products and this looks good enough to try. The products are not so hard to come by either and that’s a plus for me. I’m currently using Apple Cider Vinegar, lemon oil mixed with almond oil and it’s been good on my face so far. I’ve only tried a DIY scrub for my lip which I intended posting sometime in the future. Brown sugar is a good exfoliator and I recall adding that to my recipe for clear underarms. I even wrote about it here: http://myglowingscenes.com/5-natural-ways-to-obtain-clean-underarms/
Essential oils like lemon oil also serve as a good odour neutraliser and combined with carrier oils help after shaving.
Ooh, cannot wait to try this.I have been looking for a cheap but good face scrub, because.. recession. I will definitely go with the honey and lemon scrub. Thanks Cassie and Laila!

Hey B! Thanks for checking this out. Please let us know how it worked out for you 💞💞
My diy face mask is made with honey, milk and lemon juice… The milk doesn’t allow me to use it for a long time unless its in the fridge… I guess I would replace milk with tumeric powder… my diy works though… my face feels softer instanly too and the lemon fades my spots too. Thanks Cassie for this post!
ps… i love the new face of the blog
Turmeric! Yes you totally should! Turmeric works wonders. I justhate that it stains but it’s really effective.
Where have I been all this while 😭😭. I’m soo going to try this
Thanks for sharing Cassie! my routine is scrubbing my face real hard with a sponge and stealing mom’s rose water. It stopped working and I could not imagine buying so many (or even a few) products. It all looks so intimidating but this is definitely doable and stress-free. thanks again!
How often do I use the honey and turmeric scrub? And can I use the mixture on my body as a body scrub?
Sis this is such an old post, I don’t even use this anymore and haven’t used a scrub in about two years. Can you kindly click on my beauty tag to read my most recent routines? Also, I posted a video of my routine on my instagram.

I’ve been using the honey and sugar mask for a while now and I must say the results are splendid! I occasionally use the tumeric and honey mask too and I’ve shared this secret with my friends too!
