Life Lately || Job Hunt And Other Unrelated Life Bants.

You’re probably wondering if medical doctors have to go through the struggle that is job hunting right?

*Quick Recap – I graduated from the College of Medicine, of the University of Lagos (because it seems some people still don’t know what Uni I went to) about a month ago and have spent the better part of my post graduate life photocopying my credentials, filling application forms and carrying arround a brown paper bag* – Okay I exaggerate but you get the picture.

Well, this is how it works.

After six years (Six and the half in my case) of medical school, we are meant to go through something I like to call ‘twelve months a slave’ but popularly known as housemanship/housejob .

You’re a doctor already but sort of an intern doctor (definitely more responsibility but you get paid though) for that time period, learning more and honing on your skills, before you are eventually released into the community for the compulsory one year service back to your country (NYSC)

I’ve heard some stories from doctors of how in the good old days, you were automatically given a job in the teaching hospital of the university you graduated from after swearing that physicians oath.
I’m not sure where things went wrong but we are definitely no longer in the ‘good old days’, things are far worse : the economy is messed up, corruption have come to stay for good (I’m saying the obvious anyways and I digress)

So we write this ‘housemanship exam’ even before we write our final exams and they eventually release the names of people who have been given a housejob spot in batches.

That exam to me is just formality though, because names still gets switched and people still work their names into the list but I digress again.

So the first list has been out for more than a month now and my name wasn’t on that. Currently awaiting the second list with prayers and hope that my name will be on that one, but I’m applying at other places as well.
Something’s got to click soon.
So if you see me carrying a brown folder walking the streets of lagos, oh yes. I’ve joined the pool of unemployed graduates.
But not for long,
Not for long.
Other Random Life Updates.

1. I’ve been trying to learn this makeup thing and I started with trying to draw my brows but as of today, I have given up the cause. Saw a picture of me from the event I attended over the weekend with my huge ugly looking brows – nah, never again.
2. I really wanted to learn to sew till the tailor lady beside my house told me 50k and deflated my spirit.
3. I’m thinking of a road trip to Ibadan soon ( Even dreamt I was already on that trip last night and was stuck in horrible traffic. lol )
4. I’m not trying to over-analyze everything anymore.
5. I’m learning that first impressions are usually not so accurate.
6. I have a lot of projects to execute but procrastination and a whole lot of other setbacks.
7. This just popped into my head that I can learn graphic design and Seo things with my free time so please if you know any brand/firm that deals with such and needs an intern, epp me plix. (I don’t have a laptop or internet at home so don’t bother with suggesting I learn myself plus I’ll like to get out too)
8. My sister is back so my days are looking a little brighter.
9. I’ve been masturdating a lot. You read that wrong too right? No, not masturbate. Masturdate – google it.
I started going to the movies alone last year and discovered just how lovely and relaxing it is. #treatyourself
But I have two free movie tickets, so who wants a movie date sometime soon?
Happy new month guys!
What have you guys been up to lately?

  • Yup that's how it is alright. One thing about university is that they don't always prepare you for the life after it. I honestly thought medical doctors had is easier and that they got jobs or internships immediately after, I guess I was wrong. As for the tailor charging 50k that's way too much, I know of places in Abuja charging 30k. All the best in finding a job, I know the feeling.

    Princess Audu

    • We actually do have it easier compared to the rest because something's got to click soon but yes, its meant to be way easier and a direct job thing .

Lool, even that 30k is much Gan sef

  • Me me me! Take me 😀
Looks like I've been masturdating too. I've always wanted to do more than just movies by myself but a lot of places people give you curious looks like you're looking for man. Hian. That is unless you take pains to look very "keep off!" ie headphones, a novel, a scowl.
Wish you all the best with the house job hunt. It can be like the ultimate search but it'll come.

    • Yaay! Okay let's do it! You're the first anyways and I'll need to hear some of your tips to surviving house job as you've been there, done that. he he
      What's your email please?

Thank you!! I'm pretty positive it will come soon

    • Lmaoo, it won't be that bad na.
      Okay, maybe just a bit.

I got so used to looking at it as the normal process but now that I think of it well, its actually less than ideal.
      We'll thrive still sha

  • The economy is just so bad and I feel school doesn't prepare people enough for the outside world. You would find something soon.
50k for what? Is she going to teach you her to make the material before you see it. It's too much.

  • The long years in school is what deterred me from the medical school. You have to be really passionate. Congrats on completing medical school! I'm still trying to learn how to draw in my brows and learning to not over analyze situations saves alot of wasted time – culturedmisprint.com

  • Hahaha, brings back memories. I remember going for Luth house job interview some 10 years ago with my classmates and the question asked was for us to say our surnames one after the other, I knew I wouldn't get the job cos my surname didn't sound like a senator or traditional ruler. I was to later wait 11 months before starting my house job. See things haven't changed much.

  • I have up trying to draw the eyebrows too o. You're even lucky….you have visible eyebrows. Do you know how many times I've been asked if I shaved off mine.

And I want to watch movie o😜😜

  • Up for a movie!

I'm attending a really good fashion school but it has been subsidized for Youth corps members alone. And they teach everything from pattern drafting to fashion illustrations If you can wait to learn to sew when you're serving I can hook you up.
The price for non-corps members is equally outrageous.

In Nigeria its best to enter the job market with the mindset of giving back to society because really the "good old days" are long gone.

    • Yes, let's all go together! It will be really fun, but my second free ticket is taken -_-

Ah for real, you're the one utilizing nysc the most oh.
If I don't find another cheap alternative soon, and I get a job. I might just have to wait till nysc. *sigh*

  • Let's see the movie together! Am a 6'1 female so no awkwardness there.. :d plus I could give you the easiest pointer on the brow thingy! I guess

  • Haha, 50k is okay (I think, though many are cheaper) because she's "teaching you how to fish". If one commits to 50k to learn a craft and then uses said craft for years, surely the 50k will be earned too many times over. But of course, you're a doctor so this doesn't quite apply!

Congrats on graduating, something must click soon! Nigeria is full of struggles but we will thrive. xx

(Re: eyebrows. See Berry's 2nd latest post. There's a link to a brow tutorial by Dodos. I haven't tried but it looks easy enough.)

    • I agree with you Ekene, indeed, she's "teaching you how to fish" .

@ Cassie, from my own experience, I assure you that the value she'll add to your skill set is worth more than 50k in the long run.

      Well written 🙂

    • My dears, my cousin learnt for 5000Naira oh, so this 50k business no be for here and I went to a local tailor with a small store beside my house. Mba nu.
My mum can sew as well but she works all weekday and didn't want to stress her by asking her to teach me.

  • 50k???i learnt how to sew for less than 10k.and it was the full package..trust me.guess Enugu has its perks.however it was in the rural part since that's where my school is and people never believe when I tell them..so maybe you can try a small tailor or those tailors "we think can't do it"
As for finding a job,i hope it works out well for you.

Brows….lool…don't give up yet.i had my fair share of disappointments before I got it right.keep trying, you will too

    • Nne, I feel you because my cousin learnt for less in awka and it was the complete package as well plus extras sef. Funny thing is that it was a small tailor that I tried oh.
Maybe I should check others, their price might not be as high as hers

  • Eish, Nigeria and the struggles…hope you find a job pretty soon!! I always thought it would be direct after graduating…smh. And that 50k? Lol she can take several seats, it should never be that expensive!! But keep trying on the makeup!!! You look so good with makeup on 🙂

  • Hello Cassie,

Growing pains, they will pass. Your openness always puts a smile on my face.

I am working on putting up a Sewing Tutorials page on my blog, sewing really isn't rocket science, when you understand the basic techniques, you'll have several "eureka!" moments as you go along :-). There are numerous useful sewing resources online, thank God for Google.

I suggest that you buy a small inexpensive sewing machine, just looking at it daily will make you eager to use it and even more eager to create something that you can wear and show off with a smug "Yes, I made it myself !" lol

    • There's a machine in my house already as my mum knows how to sew.
I hear its the cutting that's most of the work and what I really need to learn.
Yes, I just really want to be able to make some simple things for myself and get that feeling. Lol

Thank you for always reading my posts Nedu, I really appreciate you

  • Twelve months a slave lol You are just too funny! 😉 Good humor will see you thru a lot of difficulties …

Here in the US doctors are 36 months a slave. My late Aunt was a Great Attorney and when I met interns or med students I would ask them how come a Lawyer goes to school for eight years and gets Lawyer pay and doctors go to school and get three years of training pay?

They weren't shy about the hardships! Before my Mommy passed I asked one that and she said "I'm tired of working for minimum wages" and my Mommy asked " is that all you really make?" She said "by the amount of hours I work, it ends up being just above minimum pay."

So I feel you on "12 months a slave" Will use that on the next intern I see.

Hope you are able to secure a position near your home! Here they must go wherever internships are available. A close friend of my Mom is a nurse married a MD and their daughter just finished her internship across the country.

Best Wishes on your hunt! You're in my Prayers! Remember in Gods Time and as you said "this too shall pass" Yeah I'm the one that reads Everything and I've masturdated many a time! LMBO 😉

    Have a Fruitful Day! 🙂

  • 50k to learn how to sew ke, My tailor told me to bring 30k and she is in iponri. You could also go online there are free tutorials (You need to get a machine to practice).

I think you should focus on building your skills the job will come with time. Make the best out of this time (Active more side hustles) Good distraction.

  • In Lag, i think the price is fair. I paid 30k to learn while during my service in Delta. Ask me if I've used that skill since then! I also paid to learn hair styling. Don't worry about the job thing. It'll always come. One can't be unemployed forever but one can miss learning new skills, travelling to dream places forever once life starts getting too busy. So enjoy the moment.
