Happy New Year || On Choosing Happiness.

“Most people are about as happy as
they make up their minds to be.” —
Abraham Lincoln
The new year didn’t start on a particularly happy note for me.
I spent the first few minutes into 2016 alone coiled up in my bed watching the fireworks outside my window and the rest of my day obsessing over finding an inexpensive printer for my blog planner, and feeling a bit alone and left out by my siblings.
I woke up yesterday morning to a terrible tummy ache and spent the rest of the day oscillating between the toilet and my bed.
Between yesterday and today, I had more than a few moments where I really just wanted to lay in bed and feel sad/sorry for myself.
I didn’t though and sometimes I hate that I’ve grown so much that I know how to control my mind because there’s this allure that comes with feeling sorry for yourself you know? and sometimes that’s just what I want to do but I’ve learned that happiness is a choice, one we sabotage by letting our mind control us instead.
I guess I’m writing this as a sort of re-reminder to myself as well as for anyone who might be needing the reminder too especially as we start the new year.
The mind is a powerful tool, one that people often times underestimate its power but that’s where it all starts from When you choose to focus on negative emotions instead, you just might be robbing yourself of joy.
It isn’t an easy task or something that happens in a day but it starts with you making a conscious effort and decision to be happy when you feel yourself starting to get into a funk.
So here’s to choosing happiness this year instead, to creating our own calm in moments of chaos and a year filled with love and laughter.
Happy new year guys!
I hope your year is off to a great start?
How do you get over moments when you feel sad/depressed?
