My Super Simple Skincare Routine For Beginners.

I’ve never been one for skin care products – my good old trusty sponge and bathing soap worked just fine, thank you. I never even bothered with cream and I was always the first to pipe up when asked about how I took care of my skin with ‘oh nothing”, a proud grin across my face.
Thankfully, I was blessed with great skin so I never had to worry about anything and using “chemicals” on my face as my sisters still mockingly call it. All that changed when out of the blues one day, I started breaking out with these tiny rashes (I blogged about it then here).

I did the ‘just give it time thing’ but it was taking too long to clear so I decided to ask people and got lots of suggestions of things to try that was really scary for me.
A makeup artist during this shoot suggested I start using a cleanser instead of my soap and sponge and maybe try to develop a skin care routine.
I was a bit hesitant because I wasn’t used to applying anything to my face and honestly didn’t want to get used to/have to depend on products but I finally caved in, did some googling on the basic skin care routine plus some of the suggestions I got and settled with the products I currently use. The rashes went and I noticed a slight improvement in my skin too.

Recently my cleanser finished and I didn’t replace it but went back to my normal soap method just to see if there’ll really be much of a difference and I “think” I noticed that my face was getting rougher.

All that long story up there is my way of saying that giving your skin a little love by developing a skin care routine can help improve your already good skin (if you’re like me with naturally good skin). It also doesn’t have to be anything complicated.

I’ll be sharing my super simple skin care routine which is really just the four basics of a skincare routine for beginners looking for a few pointers because I had to do a lot of googling to learn the essentials of a skin care routine.
Let’s dig in..

– Exfoilate.

Exfoilating helps remove dead skin and unclog your pores. I use the St ives face scrub (costs 700Naira) two-three times a week. I normally exfoilate before cleansing but I’ve been seeing online that you should cleanse first although I’ll probably still stick with my way. Which do you do first ?

– Cleanse.

I stopped using my normal bathing soap for my face and replaced it with the neutrogena oil free facial wash (1700Naira) which I use to wash my face daily during my morning and night bath but there’s an acne wash if you’re acne prone.

– Tone.

Toning helps remove last traces of make up and cleanser left behind after
cleansing, tighten skin, prepare skin for the absorption of serums and creams, reduce the appearance of pores, and restore your skin’s PH
I’m not so regular with this, mine finished a while ago and I’m yet to replace it but I use the clean and clear deep cleansing toner (Can’t remember the cost, help? But its not up to 2k) after cleansing.

– Moisturize.

To hydrate your skin!
I use this really regular St Ives daily hydrating moisturizer but there are lots of options according to your skin type and extra jara ingredients (e.g SPF ).
I used to steal my mum’s Olay which is just amazing but too expensive for me so St Ives for me now.

And

Thats about it! The four basic steps and the products I use.

What’s your skin care routine like? What products do your swear by?
What do you think about developing a skin care routine especially if you already have perfect skin?

I’ll like to read your thoughts, my people!

    Oreleona | Pristine's Bliss

    • Hmm, I've never heard of the oil free green tea wash but I can imagine that I will be effective for sensitive skin peeps.

Do you think using too many products has been bad/good for your skin so far?

    • This one isn't expensive at all compared to the numerous products out there.
I suggest you learn your skin type too – are you acne prone or you have naturally smooth skin? Dry or oily skin? Etc.
I have dry skin (I think – definitely not oily though)

Sorry, I don't know any but please anyone that does and reads this comment. Help us out, thank you!

  • I honestly don't have a routine cos I can't stick to one…. I just use my normal soap and sponge but I think I'll start with the exfoliating routine first then when I've mastered it, I can progress.. thanks for these tips

    • Lool baby girl. Its so easy to stick to it – stop ashewoing with products eh!

There really isn't much to master with it. Just follow these four basic steps and find a product for each step that suits your skin type and needs.

Use the face wash as you use your soap (but inplace of soap). Moisturize is just rubbing cream. Lol and then exfoilate every 2-3days. Finito

    • Hey Grace,
Maybe you should stop using 'everything and anything' since you admit your skin is a mess.
Trust me, just try to follow these four steps.
The St ives scrub is great for all skin types so you can get it plus its not expensive.
If you have pimples, you can get the neutrogena oil free acne wash or ask around for any wash good for acne.
Get a toner, and moisturizer that will suit your skin type and needs too
      I'm sure you'll see improvements.

  • I don't exactly have a skin care routine , tried using St.Ives fresh skin and developed the worse rash, am guessing my skin is reacting to it or just too sensitive.

You will be glad you did.

  • I agree wiv ur post, cleanse, exfoliate, toner and moisturise. What matters when adopting a personal skincare routine is consistency and following the process of cleansing, exfoliating, toning and moisturising, sunscreen is a must too. I will recommend SPF30 and face wipes are not substitutes for cleanser, also treat ur neck the same way u treat ur face, make sure ur hands are clean before u start this routine.
Once in a month, you can also exfoliate ur body with a mixture of Brown sugar and oliveoil, moisturise after u rinse off the scrub.
They are lots of affordable skincare brands around, stick to whichever products works for you, dnt be a cosmetic-whore. Also eat fruits, take cod liver oils and vitamin supplements, ferrous tablets. They help skin glow and stay nourished.
Clean&Clear, Neutrogena,Jergens, St-Ives, Palmer, etc are cool products and very affordable.

  • I'm so grateful for this post! I was just lamenting to my friend a few days ago how I really need to start taking care of my skin. I've stayed away from skin care regimens mostly because of laziness and lack of consistency; even after using my regular bathing soap, I don't use cream on my face. I've been doing my skin bad 🙁 But this 'format' seems pretty easy to follow. I'll definitely give it a try!
    Thank you!

  • Funny how I just started paying much attention to my skin this week.
Iv been having breakouts lately (growing old I guess 😥)
Iv been using lemon and sugar to scrub. I will go buy a cleanser to try it out. Great Post!

  • Thank You for sharing, I use all Beauty formula products from Charcoal face mask to micellar cleansing water, my skin only breaks out when it’s that time of the month, I’m so grateful for having a good skin, I use Ori as my body cream but I would try this out, I’m oily around my nose area, so I’m trying to skip any product with oil in it.
