Like the Cotonou trip, my visit to the recently opened Indian and Chinese place on the mainland -Gypsy’s restaurant Lagos started with a tweet from Alex.
Somehow everything starts and ends with Alex. She would always toss the blame to me claiming that I am responsible for creating a hole in her pocket but somehow most of our adventures start and end with her. That’s a story for another day though.
I haven’t done a Lagos living review type post in a while plus I was itching to leave home so I jumped at the opportunity to head out and check out this new place she claimed to have found.
Prior to today, I had never heard of the Gypsy restaurant Lagos. I took a quick glance at their instagram page before heading out and decided that I’d most likely just settle for a drink. After all, the food wasn’t my main reason for leaving my house. The company and vibes were.
So off we headed to Ilupeju (specifically 34a Gbolade Adebanjo St, Ilupeju) where the Gypsy’s restaurant Lagos is located.
My first impression was that of a cozy setting. I liked the simple but intimate design, nothing over the top or alte like Bogobiri but still cute in a way that made me think of my ex-bae and how much I would have loved to have him here. We had a thing for cozy places.
I digress though.
We settled in and glanced over the menu going back and forth before finally deciding on our order – selected mostly from the Chinese end of the menu (It’s both an Indian and Chinese restaurant).
Service was prompt and efficient. I have to give them an A1 for this. There was someone to attend to our every whim and they were very polite and courteous. I couldn’t fault anything.
We started off with the sesame rolls/ pockets (N3500)- I was a bit hesitant about getting this but Alex’s appetite wouldn’t let it be. I couldn’t complain afterward because it was a hit with both Alex and Derin and was such a huge portion which I definitely didn’t see coming.
The thing about Gypsy’s restaurant that I would eventually come to realize is that they are quite generous with their servings. We had enough food to go round and even take away. It was such a pleasant surprise.
Next up was the special fried rice (N5000), fried noodles with mixed meat (N3500) and Chicken in XO sauce (N4000). An equally large portion which we all shared amongst ourselves. Again, I had no complaints except that it could all do with some extra salt but I enjoyed it regardless.
P.S- We got just one portion of each meal and shared amongst ourselves.
To finish up our meal, we got a Chapman (costs just N500!!). The waiter suggested we try their “Nutella spring rolls” but we opted to try something different instead and settled with an Indian frozen dairy dessert (N900) called Kulfi which tasted basically like what it is – frozen milk.
I could definitely have done without this but at least, now I know what a Kulfi is.

I got this review and was inspired to try it! Not one but far from true. Their prices have increased a bit but they’re so friendly and would send their updated menu via an inquiry. Thanks Cassie!
