Pixie Glow Tonic To Go vs The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10

Asides from fashion, skincare is my other love. I like to keep it simple with my skincare products and try to stick to the basics/important things.

There is a current shift in the skincare world – from physical to chemical exfoliation, and after careful research, I decided that I was definitely going to be a part of that shift too.

This may not be news to you if you’ve read my post on “Chemical exfoliation vs Physical exfoliation” where beauty blogger/entrepreneur Ije of beauty frenzy blog educated us on the pros and cons of both types of exfoliation.

After trying out two different chemical exfoliants over the past few months, I’m finally here to give you guys an update on my chemical exfoliation experience as I promised in that post.

P.S – You should go check that post out here first as I might be using some terms already touched on in that post

For my fellow skin care lovers, I finally made the switch from physical exfoliation to chemical exfoliation and here’s a bit of my experience! Click To Tweet

Ije helped kick start my chemical exfoliation journey. I spoke to her about my major concern which was my fear that the acids might be a bit too harsh for my skin.

I had a terrible experience with the Neutrogena astringent and also Dudu Osun soap (talked about it here) years back where my face actually started peeling and ever since, I’ve been super careful about knowing the strength of the products I use on my skin.

After listening to my concerns, she recommended and was kind enough to gift me the ordinary lactic acid 10% + HA 2% to try out.

The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2%The ordinary lactic acid 10%

Product type:

The ordinary lactic acid 10% + HA 2% is a lactic acid derivative which makes it an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid). It’s a high strength formulation and they have a milder one that’s 5%

Product claim:

This 10% formulation offers mild exfoliation and is supported with a purified Tasmanian pepperberry known to reduce signs of inflammation and sensitivity that is often associated with exfoliation.

Good for mild exfoliation, uneven tone, textural irregularities, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines.

Packaging:

The ordinary lactic acid 10% comes in 30 ml size and in the usual minimalist “The ordinary” bottle with a dropper for application.

Droppers are cool until you’re me who somehow happened to tip her bottle over every time she took the dropper out to apply. I ended up pouring half the content away in the long run. sigh

First Impressions:

It has a slight “chemical smell” – for lack of a better way to describe it. Nothing offensive or unpleasant though. Also has a light, watery consistency.

My Experience:

I had heard a lot of good things about the ordinary brand – everyone kept raving about their products, so you bet that I was super excited to try this out when it came in the mail.

I was expecting to feel a slight tinge because I read that these things sting a bit, but I didn’t feel much of anything. It has a watery consistency and applies pretty well – doesn’t feel too sticky on my skin which I love.

I used this majorly in the night for a while but got discouraged afterward because I felt like I couldn’t really notice much difference. Although, if I’m being honest, my skin doesn’t exactly have a lot of issues.

I also wasted half of it (it kept tipping over ugh!) so it didn’t even last for up to a month before I ran out of the product.

I’ve read some good reviews about this product but I was honestly over it and ready to try something new and after lots of research, I decided to try a glycolic acid product (Glycolic acid seemed better suited to my skin type/needs) instead of lactic acid.

I reached out to Ije once again and this time, she recommended the Pixi Glow Tonic.

P.S – Glycolic acid vs lactic acid? What’s the tea and which should you use?

Product type:

Pixie glow tonic is also an AHA (Alpha hydroxy acid) but a glycolic acid derivative. Both lactic and glycolic do the same things: Exfoliate + hydrate but the small size of glycolic acid allows it to penetrate the skin better. This makes it more effective but also more irritating.

Related: AHAs vs BHAs . Which to use?

Product claim:

This 5% glycolic acid formulation comes in presoaked pads that offer gentle skin renewal and also contains ginseng and Aloe vera.

Brightens, hydrates, and gently exfoliates. Makes the skin look clearer & feel smoother.

Packaging:

The Pixi glow tonic to go comes in an airtight container with a lid.

First Impressions:

It has a sweet smell which I like and it also gets absorbed really quickly into the skin.

I was expecting the usual Pixi glow tonic that is in liquid form in a bottle but was pleasantly surprised to receive the “glow tonic to go” which is basically the same product but instead, comes as 60 cleansing pads presoaked in the glow tonic.

This makes for easier application and is super convenient.

My Experience:

I used this mostly in the evenings (but a few times, I used it both morning and evening) and also didn’t feel any sting on application. My face actually feels a wee bit refreshed and smoother after using this.

The pads have more than enough of the product in them to cover the face well and if you use them once a day, it should last for 2 months.

I can’t say for certain if it has significantly improved my skin because I didn’t have any skin issues I was trying to fix in the first place but I like how it feels on my skin and I’m pretty certain I’m going to keep using it as long as my account balance allows me because it’s a bit pricey.

I got both products from Beauty Frenzy shop and unfortunately because they were both gifted, I’m not 100percent certain of the price but I know the pixi one is N6000 or more. The ordinary one is a bit cheaper.

Honestly? I’d be lying if I said I do not miss using actual face scrubs (physical exfoliation). There’s something about scrubbing your face and feeling that silky smooth skin afterward lol! But I’ve definitely been sucked into this chemical exfoliation life and I’m loving it.

Have you used any of these chemical exfoliants? What was your experience like?

  • Great review Cassie. I love how honest this review was and your skin looks great too. I haven’t tried the ordinary lactic acid but I’ve tried a few products from them that I loved. Spilling is a constant issue with most of my skincare products. I remember the day my bottle of almond oil toppled and poured away the day after I bought it.

It took all my will power to not scoop it from the floor back into the jar. I was like my money can’t waste just like that for a product I just opened to use for the first time. I was so sad.

  • After reading this I feel like I’m missing out on this chemical exfoliation thingy..stuck on physical exfoliation, maybe its time to join the other team lol
Thanks for our review Cassie, now I know where i can start my chemical exfoliation process when the time is right.

  • Great review. I’ve been using the Ordinary glycolic toner for a little over a month but only at night. Slightly stingy but I’m not sure it’s actually doing anything for my skin tbh. At least I haven’t noticed any huge difference so I’m guessing it may not be what my face needs

  • I really loved the idea of The Ordinary when it first came out: cheap skin care? Of course! But it just never worked for me for some reason. It made me break out; my skin reacted so poorly so I had to let it go.

  • I recently jumped on the chemical exfoliation train and I’m starting off with the Ordinary’s AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution. It’s a great mix of Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Salicylic Acid (BHA). When it comes to exfoliation you don’t expect to see any miraculous effects because you’re pretty much taking off dead skin cells. You also don’t need to have any serious skin issues. Korean skincare brand Cosrx has the AHA 7 WHITEHEAD POWER LIQUID and BHA BLACKHEAD POWER LIQUID which are also great options.
Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is another one but for someone on a budget the Ordinary, The Inkey List and Revolution Skincare are great options.

  • I have the Lactic Acid but haven’t opened it yet. Was hoping to see where you used it in your routine. After your toner?
Lactic Acid has a larger molecular size, at least compared to glycolic so I’m not expecting any miracles.
